As the World Ages: Rethinking a Demographic Crisis

Kavita Sivaramakrishnan
Harvard University Press

The author treats the issue of global aging exploring how it was negotiated by gerontologists, doctors, social scientists, and activists. She argues against the dominant Western assumption, embraced by transnational organizations, that developing societies will experience large-scale growth of an aging population as it was experienced in Western societies, were such a growth occurred earlier. Focusing on South Asia and Africa, the author highlights the agency that was exercised by local communities in accordance to specific contemporary conditions and terms and demonstrates the diversities in global demographics.
